Lessons in grammatical metaphysics

May 27, 2012

From the Simpsons, back when they were on the Tracey Ullman Show:

H: [mildly annoyed] Now, good night, son.
B: Uh, Dad?
H: What.
B: What is the mind? Is it just a system of impulses? Or is it something tangible?
H: Relax. What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind!

Don’t be fooled by Homer’s facile deconstruction. Minding is transitive; mattering is not. Mind minds itself (logically), while matter simply matters (neurologically). Only when the duality is insufficiently drastic can it be deconstructed.
